This is a lively exposition of a Scottish, late eighteenth century, family's manoeuvres regarding the inheritance of an estate. The author, Galt, is a marvellous writer evoking personalities through the subtleties of their conversation. It is all wittily and intelligently expressed making for pleasurable reading. (Goodreads)
