Early stories by the author of Quo Vadis - a Polish country house, a first love, a Tatar raid. Sienkiewicz wrote these before the historical trilogy and the Polish landscape is already the real subject. This edition adds fifty-six plates of painting, among them works by Edvard Munch, Andreas Achenbach and Ivan Shishkin, plus a restored colour illustration, in Jeremiah Curtin's translation.
