INTRODUCTION

A couple of years ago, I wrote an encyclopedia to the new series of Doctor Who. That was big, and hopefully fairly exhaustive, and a lot of fun.

So when I suggested to BBC Books, ‘Hey let’s do the same for Torchwood’ (which at that time had only two seasons, the latter of which I’d been one of the script editors on, so knew it quite well), I thought it’d be a doddle…

And then came a fabulous radio drama. And a marvellous third series. And another three staggeringly brilliant Radio 4 dramas and, suddenly, it was a BIG PROJECT.

And here it is: everything you need to know about Torchwood. So far… Can’t wait to update it – around the time of Torchwood Series Six, I reckon. Or as I call it ‘Torchwood: Exhausted Script Editors of Earth’.

Of course, all I’ve done is compile a list of words and definitions. I didn’t even put them in alphabetical order. (Steve Tribe, my editor, did that. With some computer software that Tosh invented, I expect.) And I certainly didn’t select the pretty pictures and design it. (That’s down to lovely Richard Atkinson.) And, of course, I didn’t write the scripts. Or produce, direct, design, or anything else that the geniuses at our Upper Boat studios did.

All I’ve done is take the hard blood, sweat and tears of a few hundred talented people, type a few words up and take all the credit. And that’s unfair. And I’d love to list for you the people who really did make this book – each and every one of the writers, the actors, the directors, designers, etc.

But I can’t – because that would be a list as long as this entire book. What I can do – what I must do and I want to do – is thank a few ultra-important people. Firstly, Edward Thomas’s art department. Julian, James, Arwel, Pete, Stephen… and so many other talented and unsung heroes. Marie Doris and her make-up teams; Ray Holman and his costume teams; Neill, Rob and Kate at Millennium FX; Will, Marie and Barney from The Mill – all aspects of their incredible work are seen inside this book. The other script editors – Lindsey Alford, Helen Raynor, and especially Brian Minchin. Our producers, Richard Stokes, Peter Bennett and Chris Chibnall. And of course, our execs, Julie Gardner and the man who gave us the show in the first place – Russell T Davies.

Thanks to all of you for letting me write a book about all your work.

Oh and before you kick off your journey from ‘A For Andromeda’ through to ‘Zenegon Rain’, a quick glimpse of some of the things that you won’t get to read about, due to script changes, alterations, last-minute cuts and other ‘beyond our control’ moments… A quick shout-out to George W. Bush (the ex-President was the butt of a joke), Mikey (Carys Fletcher shagged him to death in a car), the Airport Controller (she saw Diane Holmes arrive), David Dickinson (Ianto likened Henry John Parker to him – Parker was an American millionaire at the time with a ghostly wife), Detective Sgt Parry (he was investigating Billy Davis, the serial killer), Stan Spears (Bridget’s male alter ego), a Hoix in a Wedding Dress (he’d’ve looked very fetching, too), Alf the Janitor (the Weevils got him, poor soul), Paul (we would have learned that the child in the 456 tank was Clem’s roommate in 1965), the Vardans (Doctor Who monsters from the 1970s – one was in the Torchwood cells, apparently), and Sarah Barclay (oh, I wish you could’ve met Sarah Barclay, maybe one day…).

I love this series. I hope you do too, and I hope you enjoy this book almost as much…

Gary Russell, July 2009

A&E Doctor Cardiff Royal Infirmary medic who stitched up Gwen’s head wound after she and Andy Davidson stopped a pub brawl. (1.1)

A&E Nurse Present at the hospital, in the ICU, where Nettie Williams, the Windsor Café restaurant owner and all of the family in the car were in cataleptic states. She was present when Ianto and Jack managed to revive the young boy by returning his stolen last breath to him. (2.10) (Played by CAROLINE SHEEN)

A470 Trunk road north of Cardiff leading towards the Brecon Beacons. Leighton Reynolds used to meet the Harries & Harries lorries there to pick up the alien meat they were dealing in. (2.4)

Image

ABBA Swedish pop stars who won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974. Jack remembered them fondly. (TDL)

Abaddon Cited in the Bible as the Great Devourer, and called the Son of the Great Beast by Bilis Manger, who also claimed Abaddon had been chained beneath the Rift. Bilis had manipulated the Torchwood team into fully opening the Rift and freeing Abaddon to stalk the world. Everywhere his shadow was cast, death was instantaneous, and he destroyed much of Cardiff before Jack offered himself to Abaddon, who couldn’t cope with the life energy of a man that could not die. When Abaddon was destroyed, time was flung back; everyone who had died came back to life and no one other than Torchwood ever remembered the events of the day. (1.13)

Image

Abbey Road Famous music studios in the London road of the same name. When the Rift was opened by Owen, the Beatles were seen performing on its roof. (1.13)

Aberystwyth University Location of a seminar organised by the North Wales Astronomy Society called ‘Black Holes and the Uncertainty Principle’, which Eugene Jones and his mate Gary planned to attend. Gary went alone after Eugene’s death, but Eugene’s ‘spirit’ form, created by his ingestion of the Dogon Sixth Eye, enabled him to go too, unseen by everyone. (1.9)

Access codes The access code to the Pharm’s Records Office was 41040, and the password used by Martha Jones to access the Pharm’s medical records was 72zqyfq. (2.6)

Acid Burn A movie for rent in Josh’s DVD store. (1.9)

Africa Continent not yet visited by the fictitious Samantha Jones. (2.6)

Alien locket Jewellery device that had come through the Rift. When Torchwood Three leader Alex Hopkins opened it, it made him realise that humanity was doomed, so he murdered his team, bequeathing Torchwood Three to Jack and then killing himself. (2.12)

Aliens Unnamed aggressive race that finally attacked the Boeshane Peninsula after the many times they had flown overhead. Jack described them as the most horrible creatures one could imagine, whose howls travelled before them. They killed his father and captured his brother, imprisoning Gray and making him a slave for many years. (2.5, 2.13)

Amnesia pill A compound of various mind-altering drugs, coded B67 that Jack created to act as a method of erasing short-term memory. Innocent people who encountered aliens or other Torchwood activity could be given the drug (it came in differing strengths depending on the severity of the experience and length of exposure) to remove any memory of events witnessed. Colloquially referred to as ‘Retcon’. Jack gave it to Gwen but she broke through its conditioning. (1.1) Suzie Costello had been repeatedly giving it to Max Tresillian, ostensibly testing its long-term effects, but in reality intending to drive him psychotic – up to that point, Torchwood believed that only 2,008 people had been given the pill. (1.8) Gwen gave it to Rhys and then confessed to her affair with Owen, knowing he would never remember. (1.11) Owen was convinced that Jack would give him such a high dosage if he quit Torchwood that he’d forget everything about his life for the past few years. (1.13) Gwen refused to give the pill to Rhys after he had helped end Harries & Harries’s trade in alien meat. (2.4) Jack used it on himself and the rest of the team to remove their memories of the forty-eight hours during which Adam had infiltrated Torchwood. (2.5) Jack used a special Level Six version to knock out and erase the short-term memories of the guests at Gwen and Rhys’s wedding. (2.9)

Disfigured and insane after staring into a dark star, Jonah was placed in a secure safe house on Flat Holm, an island in the Bristol Channel. His disappearance had been vigorously investigated by PC Andy Davidson, and a tiny glimpse of Rift energy on the CCTV was enough to have Andy bring Gwen into the picture. With Andy Davidson’s support, she set up a self-help group for other victims of missing people and, when Gwen came to the inaugural meeting, she was staggered by how many people had gone missing. When Gwen located Jonah, she told Nikki about Torchwood and took her to visit her son, but Nikki was horrified by Jonah’s mental state.
