In meinem ersten Studienjahr an der Cass Business School in London – damals war ich achtzehn Jahre alt – fragte mich einer meiner Freunde, ob ich ihn zum Vortrag eines Mönchs begleiten wolle.
Ich lehnte ab. «Wieso sollte ich mir das anhören wollen?»
Zu den Uni-Vorträgen von Firmenchefs, Prominenten und anderen Erfolgsmenschen ging ich regelmäßig, aber was ein Mönch zu sagen hatte, interessierte mich null. Ich bevorzugte Menschen, die etwas erreicht hatten in ihrem Leben.
Mein Freund ließ allerdings nicht locker, und schließlich meinte ich: «Meinetwegen, wenn wir danach noch in die Kneipe gehen, bin ich dabei.»
Den Ausdruck «sich verlieben» verwenden wir fast ausschließlich im Kontext von Romanzen, doch als ich an jenem Abend den Mönch erzählen hörte, verliebte ich mich. Bei dem Mann auf der Bühne handelte es sich um einen Inder Anfang dreißig. Sein Kopf war kahlgeschoren, und er trug ein safrangelbes Gewand. Er war intelligent, wortgewandt und charismatisch. Er sprach vom Prinzip der «selbstlosen Aufopferung». Und als er meinte, wir sollen Bäumen pflanzen, in deren Schatten wir nicht sitzen werden[1], machte sich in meinem Körper ein ungewohntes Kribbeln breit.
Besonders beeindruckend fand ich die Tatsache, dass er am IIT Bombay studiert hatte, dem MIT von Indien, an dem kein Normalsterblicher aufgenommen wird. Die Möglichkeiten, die so ein Abschluss bietet, hatte er also sausenlassen, um Mönch zu werden, hatte allem den Rücken gekehrt, wonach meine Freunde und ich strebten. Entweder er hatte einen Knall, oder er hatte irgendetwas ganz Besonderes entdeckt.
